Lucas 14, 1. 7-14 –  “Tu, al revés”

Un sábado, entró Jesús en casa de uno de los principales fariseos para comer, notando que los convidados escogían los primeros puestos, les propuso esta parábola: «Cuando te conviden a una boda, no te sientes en el puesto principal, no sea que hayan convidado a otro de más categoría que tú; y vendrá el que os convidó a ti y al otro y te dirá: "Cédele el puesto a éste." Entonces, avergonzado, irás a ocupar el último puesto. Al revés, cuando te conviden, vete a sentarte en el último puesto, para que, cuando venga el que te convidó, te diga: "Amigo, sube más arriba." Entonces quedarás muy bien ante todos los comensales. Porque todo el que se enaltece será humillado, y el que se humilla será enaltecido. »

Y dijo al anfitrión: «Cuando des una comida o una cena, no invites a tus amigos, ni a tus hermanos, ni a tus parientes, ni a los vecinos ricos; porque corresponderán invitándote, y quedarás pagado. Cuando des un banquete, invita a pobres, lisiados, cojos y ciegos; dichoso tú, porque no pueden pagarte; te pagarán cuando resuciten los justos.»

Hoy se acercó un niño a confesar y me dice: Me confieso que he hecho de rabiar a mis hermanos hasta hacerles llorar. Yo le pregunté: ¿Tú eres capaz de hacerles reír? El me responde que si. Entonces le dije: de penitencia lo vamos a hacer del revés: Juega y bromea a tus hermanos hasta hacerles reír.

Jesús se da cuenta que el mundo nos lleva por caminos que son engañosos y no nos llevan a la plenitud, sino que nos dejan cada vez más vacíos. El mundo nos mete unos valores y Jesús hoy nos dice: Tú, al revés!!

En este texto, Jesús es capaz de leer el corazón del hombre, penetrar en las intenciones más profundas de cada uno. Hoy, le invitan a casa de un fariseo a comer, y observando, no se detiene en lo externo de los hechos, sino que va más allá, penetra en el corazón del hombre, y desde lo profundo de las intenciones desvela cuales debieran ser las verdaderas motivaciones que hacen al hombre mucho más autentico y noble, donde su dignidad se despliega por la pureza de sus intenciones:

Habla a los comensales y habla al anfitrión. Todos tienen sus motivaciones a la hora de actuar:

-       Los convidados que quieren sentarse en los primero puestos, movido por el afán de protagonismo, por el orgullo y superioridad. Tú al revés, cuando te conviden, vete a sentarte en el último puesto, para que, cuando venga el anfitrión, te diga: "Amigo, sube más arriba." Entonces quedarás muy bien ante todos los comensales. Porque todo el que se enaltece será humillado, y el que se humilla será enaltecido. »

-       El anfitrión que invita a gente con la intención de que luego le inviten a él. Esto lo vemos hoy día en ambas circunstancias: hay quienes hacen la lista de invitados del cumpleaños del niño o de la boda según aquellos que sabe le van a volver a invitar o por que ya le han invitado, pero a lo mejor es todo una obligación por quedar bien. Tú al revés, cuando des un banquete, invita a pobres, lisiados, cojos y ciegos; dichoso tú, porque no pueden pagarte; El pago lo recibirás en otra moneda.»

Lo que Jesús denuncia es que unos y otro se mueven por puro egoísmo. Delante del egoísmo nos pone el camino contrario. Tú al revés, se humilde!!

La oración de San Francisco de Asís:

donde haya odio, ponga yo amor,

donde haya ofensa, ponga yo perdón,

donde haya discordia, ponga yo unión,

donde haya error, ponga yo verdad,

donde haya duda, ponga yo la fe,

donde haya desesperación, ponga yo esperanza,

donde haya tinieblas, ponga yo luz,

donde haya tristeza, ponga yo alegría.

El egoísmo hace mucho ruido (odio, ofensa, discordia, erro, duda, desesperación, tinieblas y tristeza) y no deja ver ni la transparencia del corazón ni la limpieza de motivaciones. Las personas sin ruido, sin doble intención son claras, sencillas, llanas, transparentes, sin doblez. No están justificándose, no juzgan a los demás, no hacen comentarios de los actos propios y ajenos, como queriendo convencer de que siempre tiene razón en lo que hace. En cambio, los que son retorcidos hacen mucho ruido; y ese ruido solo refleja el vacío de su corazón. Cuando estas junto a ellas, al final te cansan por que todo lo lían.

Esta parábola lo deja claro…

“Caminaba un hombre con un ciego. Se detuvieron en una curva; y, después de un pequeño silencio, el ciego preguntó”:

- ¿Escuchas algo? - Si, el ruido de una carreta. - Eso es, es una carreta vacía.

El hombre preguntó al ciego: ¿Cómo sabes que es una carreta vacía, si no la vemos? - Es muy fácil saber si una carreta esta vacía por el ruido. Cuanto más vacía va, mayor es el ruido que hace.

Una persona cuanto más vacía por dentro mayor ruido hace. La soberbia busca hacer alarde de lo que tiene. Sin embargo, las personas sencillas no necesitan justificarse. La humildad siempre anda de puntillas, no hace ruido, se alegra con poco, no se justifica. La humildad consiste en callar nuestras virtudes.

Nunca desestimes a tu oponente

(Lucas 4, 1-13)

Entonces lo llevó a Jerusalén y lo puso en el alero del templo y le dijo: - «Si eres Hijo de Dios, tírate de aquí abajo, porque está escrito: "Encargará a los ángeles que cuiden de ti", y también: "Te sostendrán en sus manos, para que tu pie no tropiece con las piedras".»

Jesús le contestó:

- «Está mandado: "No tentarás al Señor, tu Dios".»

El eje de las 5 reflexiones de Cuaresma gira en torno al segundo domingo (II), la Transfiguración, es decir, es la invitación a poner un horizonte claro a nuestra vida cristiana; ¿la meta? transformación en Cristo. Puesta la meta nos encontramos con dos tipos de retos: uno que viene de fuera, las tentaciones; y tres que son mi colaboración con el proyecto de colaborar en la tarea de Dios de mi transformación en Cristo. El domingo (I) hablamos de las tentaciones, aquellas que vienen a desanimarme y a obstaculizar la meta última al que ha de tender nuestra vida: reproducir la vida y el amor de Cristo. El domingo (II) es la meta: La transformación en Cristo. Los tres últimos domingos: tres ejercicios de colaboración para esta transformación: oración (III), ayuno (IV) y limosna o caridad (V).

Hablar de las tentaciones no tiene público. No interesa hablar de ellas. Es un tema que no vende. Pero ignorarlo es ya una de las trampas favoritas del tentador.  Un buen entrenador siempre te dirá una cosa: no desestimes a tu oponente. La astucia del oponente muchas veces es mayor que la nuestra. Por eso Jesús dirá en el Evangelio: Mateo 10:16 He aquí, yo os envío como á ovejas en medio de lobos: sed pues astutos como serpientes, y sencillos como palomas.

Las tentaciones pierden todo interés si no es en el horizonte de un proyecto de vida.  Si uno no tiene un ideal de vida que le proyecte hacia a delante, entonces estar dando vueltas es lo normal. Uno queda atrapado en todo tipo de tentaciones cuando no tiene bien marcado el horizonte en la vida, el proyecto del cristiano es Cristo, y de ahí nace la ilusión por la lucha y superación de obstáculos.

Teniendo Jesús la meta de su vida bien clara, entonces surge el tentador para desviarle del camino. El padre de la mentira quiere desviarle del verdadero proyecto de Dios y, bajo apariencia de bien, le hace unas propuestas que son confusas.

Según la Tradición de la Iglesia las tentaciones que se le presentan a Jesús son tres:

1) Entonces el diablo le dijo: «Si eres Hijo de Dios, dile a esta piedra que se convierta en pan.» Jesús le contestó: «Está escrito: "No sólo de pan vive el hombre".» La Tradición de la Iglesia ha incluido aquí lo que son los “placeres”.

2) Después, llevándole a lo alto, el diablo le mostró en un instante todos los reinos del mundo y le dijo: «Te daré el poder y la gloria de todo eso, porque a mi me lo han dado, y yo lo doy a quien quiero. Si tú te arrodillas delante de mi, todo será tuyo.» Jesús le contestó: «Está escrito: "Al Señor, tu Dios, adorarás y a él solo darás culto".» La Tradición de la Iglesia ha incluido aquí lo que es el “poder”.

3) Entonces lo llevó a Jerusalén y lo puso en el alero del templo y le dijo: - «Si eres Hijo de Dios, tírate de aquí abajo, porque está escrito: "Encargará a los ángeles que cuiden de ti", y también: "Te sostendrán en sus manos, para que tu pie no tropiece con las piedras".» Jesús le contestó: «Está mandado: "No tentarás al Señor, tu Dios".» La Tradición de la Iglesia ha incluido aquí lo que serían las “riquezas”.

Hay que dejar claro que son tentaciones para  desviar a Jesús del gran proyecto de Dios para con su vida.

Los Placeres pueden presentarse como tentación: O ¿a caso el placer de una vida llena de caprichos no tiene su atractivo? Pero el exceso de placer te deja atrapado en la incapacidad lucha y esfuerzo para llevar a delante la edificación de tu vida.

El Poder puede presentarse como tentación: O ¿a caso el poder y la gloria humana no tiene buen sabor? Pero te aleja de la verdadera humildad  y al final te hace creer que con tu sola fuerza lo puedes todo sin necesitar de Dios en la vida.

Finalmente, las Riquezas también pueden presentarse como tentación: O ¿a caso acumular de todo (ropa, bisutería, electrónicos, etc.) lo que se me antoja no da una grata sensación de seguridad y de glamour? Pero la adquisición sin pensar si de verdad lo necesitas te atrapa en la compulsividad y al final acabas por perder el domino de ti mismo.

Alimentar estas tentaciones acaban por dejarnos sin la fuerza de Dios, sin la capacidad de esfuerzo y sin dominio de si, de esta forma ¿crees que puedes construir el proyecto de Dios para tu vida?

Lo grandes santos siempre se han dejado guiar por un “director espiritual” o un “acompañante espiritual”. Ellos sabían bien de la necesidad de contrastar el camino de la vida para no dejarse distraer por tantas cosas que nos quitan fuerza del objetivo final, identificarnos con Cristo.

Jesús nos invita, como él hizo, a alimentar el horizonte y la meta de la vida, (oración, caridad y esfuerzo) pues sólo teniendo claro hacia donde vamos es cuando sacamos conciencia para darnos cuenta si estamos enredados en otros caminos que no nos conducen a la meta.

The two shall become one to become three

Gen 2:18-24 Ps 128:1-2, 3, 4-5, 6 Heb 2:9-11 Mark 10:2-16

A husband was talking to his wife. He said, “After putting up with you all these years I should be proclaimed a Saint.” “And I, a martyr!” responded his wife. Today’s readings talk about the beautiful institution of marriage, where God deigned that “the two become one flesh” or as one modern author noted, bearing in mind that the usual fruit of love is life, “the two shall become one to become three.” The fruit of love is life - that is where no artificial blocks are placed between love and life. Bonding usually results in babies except in a world where contraception means we want a bonding without babies and IVF gives us babies without bonding.

In general, “it is not good for man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18). After God had made woman, man made that famous exclamation of admiration and beauty: “This one is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.” Maybe for the modern fan of Barbara Cartland, this does not sound too romantic. But it is the Hebrew equivalent of saying “Wow, she is gorgeous and the one for me!” Bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh means someone who is intimately related to me, literally a part of my very being who I want to be with me as long as I am in existence. This introduces us into the notion of the marriage bond and covenant where the man and woman leave their mother and father and become one flesh.

Nowadays it seems quite easy to become one flesh with whomsoever you fancy. What a sad situation when what is presented as “normal” is in fact rather abnormal. Sex is sold as a commodity, precocious sexuality is encouraged - dear oh dear where are we going? Sexuality is a precious gift but also quite a powerful one. It is like a strong flowing river. If the river is directed in the right way it can generate much life, giving oxygen to fish and aquatic life, nourishing plants and trees served by it and providing invaluable water for local residents to drink or bathe with. When our sexuality is well-oriented it generates much life. However when the banks of the river break chaos ensues. Here in Manila the banks of the Marikina River burst. The river which previously gave life turned into a killer. Houses, cars and even human lives were swept away like leaves. Human sexuality, when it is disordered and not used according to its ultimate purpose, destroys lives. You only have to listen to those who have engaged in adultery to discover the chaos they have caused and the brokenness they feel.

The sacramental bond of marriage gives strength to the union between man and woman. Some do not believe in the sacrament anymore. Perhaps they have lost faith in love itself. But the sacramental bond gives strength and unity to the marriage. How beautiful the testimony of fruitful married love when it is correctly understood and lived out. As Jesus said, “Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate." Mutual respect, dialogue and of course forgiveness help so much. To be able to say “I am sorry.” Only three words... but not so easy to say sometimes. Faithful married love is a concrete sign of God’s faithful love for the world of today. Faithful love is always fruitful. Even infertility is not a barrier to fruitfulness. True love will bear fruit in front of all obstacles. Like a couple I know who could not have children of their own but their love bears the fruit of joy in all they meet. Even the physical infertility could not stop them bearing fruit in the form of adopting a beautiful child. Truly it is selfishness and pride that often makes love sterile.

And children themselves can do much to help the environment in the household. Before when I was working I would give material goods to my family as a sign of my love for them. But now as a missionary priest I have no money! They have to help me and they are so kind and generous. But what I give my family now is the love of Christ. This is a gift that is not just for Christmas but for the whole of eternity!

We close by praying for all the families in the world of today. I pray that all families can live out their wonderful mission to bring God’s life and love to the world. I know one family here in Manila and the whole family is dedicated to this mission. The dad is thinking how to bring more people to know Christ through golf and business, the mum helps out preaching the Word of God and their children are not merely concerned with the usual college student worries but are trying to reach out to many youth who are a bit lost. Hurray for the great Christian example of this family and may they inspire many more to do the same. Amen.

26th Sunday of Ordinary Time, REFLECTION Sunday´s Gospel

Small details are important

The other day after celebrating a mass for a business, the owner took us for lunch. After the meal I thanked him and said, “Jesus said that even if you give one glass of water to one of his followers you will not go without reward. How much more you will receive after giving us not only iced tea but a nice lunch as well!” Jesus notices the small details. We have a God who notices when a sparrow falls and when a hair falls from our head. God is not indifferent to human effort, even if it seems rather small. Each prayer is heard and each good thought is counted. At the end of our lives we will give an account of each word we have said.

For our lives in Christ we need the grace of vigilance and attentiveness. The spiritual battle is won and lost in the small details. If you are faithful in the small the big things will take care of themselves. Recently we had a retreat with some teenagers, 12 and 13 years old. How beautiful to see the delicacy of their conscience, very sensitive to the Spirit of love in their hearts and trying to put into practice what God is asking from them. We can know many good things but we should try to put them into practice. Here being radical is helpful! When we notice things that block our following of Christ we should not beat around the bush or prune with excuses for our faults and failings: “I am only human!” but go to the root. “If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. If your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out.” Radical options give clarity. There was a man I know who got hooked on the Internet, in XXX sites. He said, “At first I controlled it but later it controlled me. I needed to cut it! I took some scissors and cut it off! The Internet connection!” Take the axe to the root of the tree, don’t just prune it but be radical (from the Latin word for ‘root’) and go to the roots.

I cut with alcohol because it does not help me. It is easier many times to be radical than to say I will just have one and then have ten. Recently the British Medical Association asked for a ban on alcohol advertising. This is how problematic drinking has become in the UK. I offer my little option to not drink for many people whose lives are controlled by it. Even if it is in “moderation” some of the money spent on it could go towards better causes such as the victims of the flooding in Manila, Philippines.

Referring to the sensible use of wealth St James in today’s second reading gives strong advice against misuse of earthly riches “Come now you rich, weep and wail over your impending miseries…you have lived on earth in luxury and pleasure.” It is true as the African proverb goes “Luxury corrupts more than poverty.” As Catholics we believe in the Universal destination of goods. Sometimes we just have too many things. It is hard to justify that spare pair of unused shoes in the cupboard when Christ is walking around bare foot in the lives of many poor people. Recently we had a mass in an orphanage. A well-to-do lady came at the end and complained that the altar was not grand enough. Perhaps she forgot that Jesus was born in a stable and lived a life of poverty. I reminded her that we were in an orphanage and probably the money was being spent on the orphans instead. St John Chrysostom once said, “Of what use is it to weigh down Christ’s table with golden cups, when he himself is dying of hunger? What is the use of providing the table with cloths woven of gold thread, and not providing Christ himself with the clothes he needs? Do not, therefore, adorn the church and ignore your afflicted brother, for he is the most precious temple of all.” “Anyway,” I said to her, “if you are really concerned perhaps you could make a small donation to the sisters to contribute towards a new altar.” “Oh no Father, I wasn’t meaning that.” she replied defensively.

Sometimes we may not be materially rich but spiritually so. So much faith, so many experiences of prayer, so many masses but who benefits? Anyone else? We have received so much that we can become spiritually overloaded. We need to share! Generosity is the only antidote. As it says in today’s first reading, “Would that all the people of God were prophets!” And we are, as in baptism we receive the triple dignity as priests, kings and prophets. Let us all exercise our prophetic task in sharing the love of God we have received with others. Let us cut out our pride which makes us think we are better than others. Even our giving can inflate us because we think we are doing others a favour but we are merely giving them what belongs to them by justice. Let us root out our selfishness with generosity and take care of our friendship with Christ, especially in the small details.
