The foundation for humility simply is that each human being is quite powerless in and of himself. Deprived of God, family, friends, society, and all the graces and blessings that come his way he is dust. Since everyhing has been given to him and is not his in the strictest sense of the word, that is, not originating from him, and not meant for him alone, he has no reason for vainglory.
